WONDERFUL EUROPEAN COUNTRY STYLE RESTAURANT
-
(10/14/2009 5:05:06 PM)
After fifteen years of driving by the sign on the highway 99 by Twin Lakes in Creek Side and been recommended by Seatle’s friends. We decided to check out Le Gros restaurant.   We drove up the hill to find a spacious free parking lot. The restaurant was sitting on top of a rock hill above the parking lot. We made our way up the covered stairs; the exterior had the charm of your typical casual European country style restaurant with Petanque (les Bolles) courts, the patio was surrounded by flowers and cut trees turned into tables.   The atmosphere was homey and warm with a lot of windows and French doors accessing the patio. The center of the room was mounted with a wonderful stone fire place. One side was facing the foyer & lounge area and the other side was facing the dining room giving the restaurant a chalet feeling.   The menu was reasonably priced with a lot of difficult choices of classic European dishes like escargot, onion pie, prawns cocktail, steak tartar, Dover sole, prawns provincial, duck, rabbit and schnitzel. The menu was well complemented by daily specials such as soup, fish, pasta and meat of the day   The server was friendly and very knowledgeable. He recommended the last and late harvest hand picked Lillooet’s tomato salad to start follow by the venison medallion complemented with wild white chanterelles mushrooms. Those two dishes were simply amazing. The generous portion came with vegetables and Pemberton’s potatoes, also available and to die for were the pomme frites.   The ingredients were very much in season and the portions were generous. The rack of lamb had eight chops; the Cornish hen was the entire bird on the plate. The food and the sauces were tastefully flavored.   We had no room for dessert; the server suggested we share the hand pick Pemberton plums home made cake and it was wonderful.   Our dinner was complemented with a reasonably price recommended French wine.   We enjoy witnessing one person only working the room with Pascal the chef/owner coming in and out of the kitchen checking and socializing with the customers.   We travel to Europe every year visiting where we are from. We often eat out in Whistler recently we find the portions are too small and it is also getting way to pricey often the service is below average.   We had a memorable experience at Le Gros restaurant that made us feel at home. We find Le Gros could be the best value restaurant in Whistler.   As per our friends that recommended Le Gros restaurant to us and many locals we were told; we will visit Pascal regularly in the future. CHAPEAU
Quite disappointing.

After not being able to go the Rim Rock Cafe, we decided to try Le Gros.  The only info on their website was the spring menu from 2007.  Fortunately (or unfortunately) there weren't many changes, except in prices of course.  The restaurant itself looked like it opened in the late seventies and not much has changed since (not even the background music!)  The food was strictly average and for that price and being in upscale Whistler, I expected better.  The service was below average, only two servers for the whole room on a Saturday night?  We will not go back.
Not worth the journey

We decided to try this out-of-the-way restaurant in Whistler thinking that it must be pretty good to survive so far from the village. There was a nice cosy feel that gave a real sense of a family-run restaurant instead of the glitzy chains that monopolise Whistler, and given the ingredients used, the prices weren’t outrageous. Those positives apart, the rest of the experience was quite disappointing. The food was smothered in butter – I love French food, but I’ve never seen so much used in a single dish, and portion quantity seemed to take precedence of quality. The wine list was also a let-down – no French wine available by glass in a French restaurant? The service was so-so, but I expected better from a privately run establishment. I don't think it's worth getting in your car for.
Le Gros, just down from Creekside

We had a very nice meal here.  It's a warm and inviting restaurant serving nice french food.  Great taste on everything, in particular I remember the shrimp bisque as the appetizer and the nice white wine sauce that came with the halibut. We will go there again.
